Milk snakes are secretive burrowers, hiding by day in loose, sandy soil, beneath objects on the ground or under the bark of tree trunks or logs. They are nocturnal, or move above ground at night.

Milk Snakes are much more opportunistic eaters than the fox snake or corn snake. They have been known to consume a variety of animals including rodents, eggs, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.

The milk snake has a gray or light brown background color with three rows of reddish-brown or brown blotches bordered in black. There is usually a whitish "Y" or "V"-shaped marking on the top of its head.

The Eastern Milk Snake suffers from one of the myths about snakes, that it milks cows. That belief/story plainly is not true. Also, people sometimes kill Eastern Milk Snakes because of their resemblance to the Northern Copperhead Snake.

A boldly patterned snake, the milk snake has a light gray to tan body covered with reddish-brown blotches bordered in black.

Milk Snake (L. triangulum triangulum): The milk snake is a mid-sized nonvenomous snake that attains lengths between 24 - 35 in (61-90 cm). It derives it scientific specific name from the triangular or Y-shaped light patch at the base of the head.

Red Milk Snake Lampropeltis triangulum syspila. Uncommon and infrequently encountered in northwestern portion of Appalachian Plateau. Inhabits woodland, often near rocky areas.

The milk snake is a true constrictor. It usually throws several loops of its muscular body around its prey. These coils do not crush, but merely exert enough pressure to prevent breathing. The victim soon suffocates and is then swallowed whole.

This species still occurs within two miles of The Grove, but it is rather uncommon. The March 26, 1855 mention of a "milk snake" may refer to a misidentified fox snake, Elaphe vulpina vulpina.

Description: 23 5/8 - 35 ½" (60 - 90 cm). Vivid color patterns on dorsum blotched with brown to tan to red bands usually in three rows; mid-dorsal row much larger than lateral rows.

Known predators include the milk snake, black snake, red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, sparrow hawk, broadwinged hawk, barn owl, short-eared owl, barred owl, horned owl, long-eared owl, screech owl, fox, weasel, and skunk.

Don't be fooled by the rattle - there are several snake species (black racer, milk snake, hognose) that vibrate their tails when cornered.

Some species, like milk snakes and bull snakes are constrictors. They squeeze their prey to suffocate it, then swallow it whole. Other species, like the common garter snake, simply snatch their prey quickly and swallow it alive.

From this table I learned that Mesa Verde National Park contains a bunch of herps that I have yet to encounter anywhere, including Tiger Salamanders, Western Chorus Frogs, Variable Skinks, Milk Snakes, Smooth Green Snakes, and Prairie Rattlesnakes.
