Monarchs can be found all over the world, but it's found most often in North, Central, and South America. It lives in open fields of milkweed during the spring and summer months, and in areas with lots of trees to perch on during the winter.

Monarch migration back to the north is like a relay race! The original butterfly dies along the way, but the offspring it leaves behind continues on to the north where the cycle will start again in the fall.

Often called the Milkweed Butterfly, this large black veined orange winged butterfly can be observed feeding on milkweed. During its mating behavior, the adult male monarch will display a "courtship dance.

Monarch butterflies and their annual migration face threats in their summer sites, as well as the wintering sites. In the north, milkweed is often destroyed, as it is seen as a harmful weed by some people.

Monarch butterflies are found in meadows, roadsides, and sandy areas of North America where milkweed plants grow. The larvae, or caterpillars, of this insect feed on the milkweed. Eventually they undergo metamorphosis, changing into butterflies.

Monarchs are large butterflies, noted for their powerful flight and long migrations. They have a wing span of 3 3/8 - 4 5/8 inches.

I have seen the remains of some of these ancient monarchs of our forests so excavated, and that so singularly, that the tottering fragments of the trunk appeared to be merely supported by the great pile of chips by which its base was surrounded.

If milkweed grows in your area, monarch caterpillars will be on the plants in the spring or summer. Locate many large moth caterpillars like the tomato sphinx caterpillar by the frass below the plant they are eating.
