The monarch butterfly is an attractive insect that has reddish-orange wings, with a black border and white spots along the edges. Male and female monarchs look very much alike, except for their scent glands.

Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)
Often called the Milkweed Butterfly, this large black veined orange winged butterfly can be observed feeding on milkweed. During its mating behavior, the adult male monarch will display a "courtship dance.

The monarch butterfly has brownish-orange wings with black to dark brown on the margins. The wings also have two rows of orange and/or white spots and veins outlined in black. Males have a black scent pocket on their hind wings.

The monarch butterfly is a common insect that lives throughout Minnesota during the summer. It's seen in backyards, parks, and in rural areas.

In the spring and summer, the monarch butterfly's habitat is open fields with lots of milkweed. Their winter habitat is in areas with lots of tree cover.

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is frequently seen in most parts of New Zealand. Easily identified by its bright colours the monarch butterfly has a large wingspan commonly between 80-100 mm (O’Brein, 1985).

All butterflies have six legs and feet. In some species such as the Monarch Butterfly, the front pair of legs remains tucked up under the body most of the time, and are difficult to see.

A few species can fly at great heights, as much as 10,000 feet (3,050 meters). Some species can also cover long distances, like the monarch butterfly Danaus plexippus, which can migrate 2,000 miles (3,218 kilometers) or more.

Some, like the milkweed worm (the larva of the monarch butterfly), are relatively naked, while other caterpillars are covered by hairy bristles, sometimes equipped with irritating chemicals that can cause intense itching.
