The meerkat is the most sociable of all the mongooses, living in close-knit colonies numbering as many as 2 dozen. Each meerkat has special duties that benefit the group as a whole.
The first group consisted of the small jackal-like hyaenas, which were similar to the present mongooses and civets and had rudimentary jaws and a poor dentition.
In Hawaii, the state bird, the Nene Goose, is in danger, in part, because of the mongoose. The mongoose was brought into Hawaii by planters to help control rats in sugar cane fields.
The eggs are eaten by raccoons, skunks, opossums, mongooses, coatis, and dogs. Hatchlings are preyed upon by mammals, sea birds, crabs, and carnivorous fishes. Predation continues until the turtles are big enough to avoid being swallowed.
Feral domestic cats are also ruthlessly exterminated by field workers, but the mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatus) and the monkeys are not such a direct threat.
By far the most serious threat to the species is depredation of eggs and young by feral predators, notably cats and mongooses. Even incidental occurrences of single individual predators can decimate a nesting colony.
A meerkat is not a cat, but is a suricate, a member of the mongoose family. (The name meerkat is the general Afrikaans term for mongoose.) Although they sometimes sit up like prairie dogs they are no relation.
