Hawaiian monk seals, Monachus schauinslandi, feed on fish such as eels and flatfish, as well as octopus, and lobster. They are often found feeding on the slopes of coral reefs at depths of up to 75-90 m for an average of 20 minutes.

Mediterranean monk seal
There are three species of monk seal. The Hawaiian species is endangered, the Mediterranean species is critically endangered, but sadly it is too late for the Caribbean species, which has become extinct.
The monk seals have been greatly depleted by hunting in past centuries and their survival is threatened, although they are no longer of commercial importance. The Caribbean monk seal is believed by some authorities to be extinct.
Dozens of animals have gone extinct in the Caribbean over the past hundred years such as monk seals, ivory-billed woodpeckers, and different species of hutias, rodent that looks like a cross between a guinea pig and a rabbit.
The last aquatic mammal to become extinct was the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s.
