The mountain nyala is endemic to Ethiopia (East, 1996), being found only to the east of the Rift Valley (Wilson & Reeder, 1993). Its distribution map was acquired from the accurate country map in East (1988) and was revised by Dr. R.

 


The mountain nyala eats herbs and shrubs and occasionally grass, lichens, ferns and fallen leaves. Seasonal movement occurs, but it is not extensive.

The mountain nyala was brought to the attention of Western science by Lydekker in 1910, who suggested that this species "in some degree intermediate between the Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) and the Kudu (Strepsiceros capensis) . . .

The rare Mountain Nyala is found only in the highlands of central Ethiopia and today rates as one of the most difficult to bag in terms of scarcity and cunning.

The closely related mountain nyala of Ethiopia is found 2 740 m above sea level in the Chercher, Arusi, Bale and Amorro mountains, weighs 204-227 kg and has an average shoulder height of 134 cm.
