The Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus inornatus) is a resident from southern Oregon southward through much of California and into northern Baja. The one in the top image here was at Yucaipa, San Bernardino Co., California, in August, 2001.

The mouse is nocturnal, using cover of darkness to escape from predators and is active all year. Even though it is considered large for its species, the Florida Mouse is small, only growing to an average length of 5-8 inches (12-20 cm).

The mouse is a very adaptable creature who can thrive in almost any environment and has resisted mans' attempts to eradicate it for centuries.

This mouse's tail is fragile and can break off to allow the mouse to escape a predator. If lost, the tail will not grow back again.
