Yellow Mud Turtle (Kinosternon flavescens flavescens)
Description The yellow mud turtle is a small, olive-colored turtle. Its name comes from the yellow-colored areas on its throat, head, and sides of its neck.

The Florida Mud Turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum steindachneri, is found throughout the state. It is found primarily near small, shallow bodies of water. Its oval shell is dark and unmarked.

Mud turtle is the common name given to two genera of aquatic turtles: Kinosternon, mud turtles found in North and South America, and Pelusios, mud turtles found in Africa. Some species are kept as pets.

Painted turtles are often erroneously referred to as "mud turtles" by many Minnesotans. True mud turtles are of the genus Kinosternon and do not occur in Minnesota, but are found in much of southern United States.

Two other species of small turtles are the American mud turtles and musk turtles that live in an area that ranges from Canada to South America. The shell length of many species in this group is less than 13 centimetres (5.1 in) in length.

The Painted Turtle is the most common turtle in the region. In parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin they are commonly called "mud turtles".

The musk turtles and mud turtles (family Kinosternidae) are common small turtles of the E United States, and are found only in the Americas.

PREDATORS : Mud turtles (Kinosternon flavescens), spotted skunks (Spilogale putarius) [13], raccoons (Procyon lotor) [5], common crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), and other tadpoles [9] have been noted to prey upon spadefoot tadpoles.
