Musk ox Hoofed mammal that is a herbivorous (Ovibos moschatus) living in Arctic America and Greenland. It was exterminated in Alaska around the middle of the 19th century, but was later restored their Nunivak Island.

Musk oxen (Ovibos moschatus) are large, long-haired, horned mammals that are well-adapted to their cold, Arctic environment. They are found in the far north of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Norway, Siberia, and some Arctic islands.

Musk-oxen are herd animals, and groups of two or three dozen animals are sometimes led by a single female. Herds use cooperation to deal with predation by wolves or dogs.

Musk deer are strongly territorial. Within its home range, it regularly uses well-established trails connecting areas used for feeding, hiding and other activities.

*** Musk brings a high price. In Nepal in 1972, it was more valuable than the same weight of gold.
*** Despite its economic importance and wide distribution, as late as the middle 1980's little had been learned about the biology of the musk deer.

Musk oxen are large, hairy mammals that live in the far north.

The musk gland contains about a 28.4ml of oily solution of sulphur alcohol called butylmercaptan, enough to product half a dozen sprays. When eaten, the musk poisons the nervous system, and can cause death.

The musk secreted from the anal gland (called Civetone) was used in the manufacture of perfumes for thousands of years, with Civets being kept in captivity to allow the musk to be extracted at regular intervals.

Cattail (Typha spp.), water sedge (Carex aquatilis), musk-grass (Chara spp.), slim-stem reedgrass (Calamagrostis neglecta), and spikerush (Eleocharis spp.) are also common [7,10].

When handled, they usually do not strike or bite, but they may release a mild musk from their scent glands at the base of the tail. The musk smells like that of a red fox, hence the common name (Vogt, 1981).

Some of those which breed in the State of Maine, place it on the hillocks of weeds and mud prepared by the musk-rat, on the edges of the lakes, or at some distance from them among the rushes.

For example, a fully-grown musk ox or caribou would be far too large for any single wolf to tackle. A herd of musk oxen will automatically form a defensive circle with their calves in the middle if they sense the approach of wolves.

The mating season begins in March when the males attract the females with thundering bellows and with musk released from several scent glands near the mouth and cloaca (vent). A receptive female will answer a male with a quieter bellow.

Remarks: Striped skunks are probably best known for their ability to spray musk when they feel threatened.

The musk secreted by the glands close to the African Palm Civet's reproductive organs has been collected by Humans for hundreds of years.

Like humans, most predators avoid skunks because of the odor of their musk. When threatened or disturbed, skunks make a purring sound and often growl when attacked by humans.

Some keepers keep them with musk turtles and other turtles in an aquatic environment. They do bask and are often found out on the basking sites or resting at the edge of the pond or on driftwood logs, but seem happy to live in this aquatic situation.

True to its name, the musk turtle emits a strong odour when handled. This scent is produced by two glands, adjacent to the bridge between the carapace and the plastron, which exude a yellowish liquid.

Not only can they be agressive, but they have very powerful musk glands near the cloaca that can make a a herper with even the best control gag.

Amur leopards prey on roe deer, wild boar, sika deer, musk deer and hare. They hide food for later consumption.
Long legs are an adaptation to the snowy conditions of its historic range. It's a good climber, swimmer and jumper.

Animals found in the tundra include the musk ox, the Arctic hare, the polar bear, the Arctic fox, the caribou and the snowy owl.
