Mute Swan
Bird. One can guess from the name that mute swans don't have much to say. They do, however, hiss when threatened. Swans are the largest of the water birds. Males weigh about 11 kg (24 lb) and females about 9 kg (20 lb).

The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is an old world species which has been introduced across much of the United States where it is often commonly seen in urban parks and gardens as well as many rivers and large lakes.

The Mute Swan is an introduced species, brought from Europe as an "ornamental" species. Escaped birds have established wild populations in scattered locations across North America.

The mute swan is one of seven swan species found world-wide and was introduced to New Zealand from 1866. It maintains a tenuous hold in the wild on wetlands in Hawke's Bay, North Canterbury and lake Ellesmere.

Mute swans are a familiar and impressive sight in Britain. Often found on ponds and rivers in parks and other urban areas. By tradition, all mute swans belong to the monarch.

Mute swans are usually silent, as the name suggests. But adults sometimes snort and make hissing noises or puppy-like barking notes, though the sounds are not far-reaching due to their straight trachea.

Animals like pigeons, mute swans, and starlings were brought over because they reminded people of their homeland. Out of Control Kudzu is a plant from Japan. It was brought to the US to help stop soil erosion.

The other resident swan, the mute swan, is a European import. The easiest way to distinguish the mute swan is by its orange bill. They also often have a bulbous knot at the top of their bill.

The swans you are seeing are mute swans, and like English sparrows and starlings, they are not native to North America, but an introduced species.

The orange-billed white trumpeter swan, Cygnus buccinator, seen in parks, is the mute swan, of Old World origin. It breeds in the wild state in parts of Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Like some of our other large wild birds, swans pair for life, and it is customary for the young to remain with their parents during the first year. The swan seen in our parks is the Mute Swan and is not a native bird but one brought here from Europe.

American Wigeon (Anas americana).

They have a long and graceful curved neck and an extremely long, convoluted trachea , which helps the bird make its far carrying calls . The orange billed and white Swan seen in parks is the mute swan, belonging to the old world origin.

Bill colour varies; the four subarctic species have black bills with varying amounts of yellow, and all the others are patterned red and black. The Mute Swan and Black-necked Swan have a lump at the base of the bill on the upper mandible.
