Tidewater gobies feed mainly on small animals, usually mysid shrimp, gamarid amphipods, and aquatic insects, particularly chironomid midge larvae (Swift et al. 1989; Swenson 1995; Moyle 2002).

The long-snout seahorse is a carnivore that eats tiny zooplankton, mysid shrimp and small crustaceans.

A seahorse will remain motionless until a small animal, such as a mysid shrimp passes within reach. The seahorse will suddenly flick up its head, and suck the prey out of the water column through its long tubular snout.

They are less likely to carry diseases, they will accept frozen foods such as mysid shrimp, and they aren't exposed to the shock and stress of being taken out of the wild and placed in a small aquarium.
