Night Snake
Hypsiglena torquata
The Night Snake is at home in a wide variety of climates, from the temperate northwestern United States to tropical Mexico. Like other snakes that are active after dark, it has vertical pupils.

 


Night Snake (Hypsiglena torquata)
Description: Adults 12" to 20" in length. Color gray, yellowish, or beige, with dorsal row of dark brown spots. Row of smaller spots on sides; usually a large brown blotch on each side of neck.

The Night Snake is from the order Squamata. Species from this order are amphisbaenians, lizards or snakes. There are over 6,000 living species belonging to the squamata order - it is the largest order of all reptiles.

Description: Night Snakes are pale grey, beige or light brown reptiles. They have brown paired blotches on the dorsum and usually three large black blotches on the neck.

The Night Snake is pale grey, beige or light brown with pairs of brown blotches down the back. There are usually three large black blotches on the neck. The underside is white or yellow.

The Texas night snake should be more common in the western part of the Metroplex than indicated by these observations.
