Description: Northern cricket frogs (Acris crepitans) are 0.5 - 1.5 inches long.

Northern Cricket Frog - Acris crepitans
This is a very small frog that is brown with stripes on legs and green spotting. Formerly found on L.I. and S.I. in wetland habitats.

Northern cricket frogs are thought to hibernate in crayfish burrows and cracks in pond banks (Irwin et al. 1999). They emerge from winter dormancy in late April. Breeding is stimulated by rain, and occurs from late May to July (Burkett 1984).

Small. Highly variable in color (browns, grays, greens, etc.) and pattern (plain, mottled, etc.). Back of head with darker triangular mark (not always obvious).

Moist, warty skin can be quite variable in color. Dark triangular mark between the eyes. Often a Y-shaped mark on back. Male's call sounds like someone is clicking 2 stones together.

The Northern Cricket Frog, Acris crepitans crepitans, is found in wetlands in the Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties. It is similar to the Florida Cricket Frog.

We have two sub-species of Cricket Frogs in WV, Acris crepitans blanchardi (Blanchard's Cricket Frog) and Acris crepitans crepitans (Northern Cricket Frog).
