Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

NORTHERN FLICKER FACTS
Description
The Northern Flicker is a medium to large woodpecker. The back is gray brown with dark bars. The underside is off white with small black spots. It has a black crescent on the chest. The rump is white.

Northern Flicker Behaviour
Male Northern Flickers drum to attract potential mates in the spring. In my suburban community, where dead trees (called snags) are rare, male flickers prefer to drum on light standards.

Habitat The northern flicker can be found in open forests, woodlots and groves. It is common in parks and gardens.

DESCRIPTION: The northern flicker is Alabama's state bird where it is often referred to as the "Yellow-hammer." The name "Yellow-hammer" comes from a term that was applied to a company of young cavalry soldiers from Huntsville.

The Northern Flicker is a moderately large woodpecker - bigger than a Hairy or a Downy, but not nearly as large as a Pileated. Unlike other woodpeckers, you often see them foraging on the ground. Ants are one of their main sources of food.

Cavities excavated by northern flickers (Colaptes auratus) and natural cavities located 6.5 to 35 feet (2-10.7 m) above the ground are commonly used as nesting sites [24].

Breeding: Nest sites for the Northern Hawk Owl are most often in enlarged Northern Flicker or Pileated Woodpecker holes, tops or hollows of tree stumps, and even occasionally in old nests of raptors or crows.

The species which are most similar in the Southeast are the Northern Flicker and the Red-headed Woodpecker. The Northern Flicker looks more brown overall, does not have the red nape or crown, has a large white rump patch, and has a black bib.

Buffleheads prefer to nest in the abandoned holes of Northern Flickers. Nesting habitat usually includes poplar or aspen trees near freshwater permanent ponds or lakes.

Often "migrating northern flickers, white-necked ravens, and many songbird species," find feed and cover in the shrubs and trees along the playa periphery, said the university's site. "Sometimes more than 10,000 birds will congregate at the playa.

They nest almost exclusively in holes excavated by Northern Flickers and, on occasion, by Pileated Woodpeckers.
