NORTHERN GOSHAWK FACTS
Description
The Northern Goshawk has a blue gray back and pale gray underside, with fine bars on the chest. The top of the head is dark gray and it has a white stripe above the eyes.

Song: Northern Goshawk Call.
Migration: Some migration southward in winter from normal range in Canada, New England, and the U.S. Rockies. Some permanent residents in the Black Hills.

I count my strides as I proceed through the Ponderosa woodland, "seventy-eight, seventy-nine". I stop to recheck my compass bearing.

The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is a large (20 - 26 inch), robust hawk. It has a long narrow tail and short rounded wings. The wingspread is 3-1/2 to 4 feet. There is a whitish stripe over the eye.

Status Uncommon resident. Breeds. Most frequently seen during fall migration. Favours heavily wooded areas, and does not fly high.

Northern goshawks are strong, powerful birds of prey that live in mature woodlands. Hunting amongst the trees is easy for these skilled fliers, with their rapid turn of speed and excellent manoeuvrability.

Habitat and range
Mainly they live in wooded areas in the eastern to northeastern part of the state. Woodcock are migratory birds,and spend the winter in a number of southern states.

First of all we had the Northern Goshawk (family Accipitridae - Hawks) in our garden once. It had just caught a woodpigeon. We quickly tried to take some pictures but with not a good result.

Predators:
Red-Tailed Hawk, Northern Goshawk, the Peregrine Falcon, and the ring-tailed cat.
Locomotion:
They are strong fliers and generally fly at a high altitude. When they fly it is often in a V-formation or a line.

Natural predators include Northern Goshawks, Great Horned Owls and probably other large raptors including Cooper's and Red-tailed Hawks. Fishers prey upon eggs and young in the nest.
Did you know?

Several raptors pose a threat to this parrot. Notable are the Red-Tailed Hawk, Northern Goshawk, and the Peregrine Falcon. Their nesting and roosting sites are also in danger from the Ring-Tailed Cat.

It is a widespread species throughout the temperate parts of the northern hemisphere. In North America it is named as the Northern Goshawk. It is mainly resident, but birds from colder regions of north Asia and Canada migrate south for the winter.
