Northern pine snakes have a cartilage structure in the throat just in front of the windpipe. When they exhale,
they make a hissing sound which can be extremely loud.

Rare with no vouchered specimen for AR. Very large and powerfully built. Dull white background with black blotches. Blotches become more regular and banded toward tail. Can hiss loudly.

There are two subspecies of pine snakes that occur in Georgia and South Carolina, the northern pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus melanoleucus) and the Florida pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus mugitus).

The Florida pine snake is very similar to the Louisiana pine snake, the northern pine snake and the black pine, they are all subspecies of the same genus and species. They are also very closely related to the bullsnake.
