DESCRIPTION: 10-27 11/16" (25.4-70.6 cm). A small slender snake, with a golden-yellow neck ring. Back gray, olive, or brownish, sometimes approaching black.

Northern Ringneck Snake - Diadophis punctatus edwardsii
Description: 9 13/16 - 15 ¾" (25 - 40 cm). Slate gray to black dorsum with smooth scales. Golden ring behind head. Belly is bright yellow to red with some black spots possible.

Subspecies Minnesota has two of the twelve recognized subspecies of Ringneck Snake: the Prairie Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus arnyi) and the Northern Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii).

The northern ringneck snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsi) inhabits the mountains and generally has a complete neck ring and unpatterned underside.
