Size: 4.5-7.5 inches (12-21 cm) in length
Habitat Type:
Cool springs, spring seeps, and fast-flowing mountain streams with rocky substrate.

 


NORTHERN SPRING SALAMANDER
Gyrinophilus p. porphyriticus
The northern spring salamander ranges from south-western Maine and southern Quebec to northern Alabama (Green and Pauley 1987).

Natural History of the Northern Spring Salamander, Gyrinophilus p. porphyriticus, at the Westvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest in Randolph County, West Virginia. Currently - Natural Resource Specialist.

The photo below is a larva of the Northern Spring Salamander, G. p. porphyriticus. Note the external gills typical of all aquatic salamander larvae. Also below is a photo of an adult Northern Spring Salamander.
