OKAPI & MAN
The okapi first became known to the scientific community through the British explorer Sir Harry Johnston at the turn of the century.
Okapis are diurnal and forage along fixed, well-trodden paths through the forest (Grzimek 1990). They feed primarily on the leaves, buds, and shoots of more than 100 different species of forest vegetation (Bodmer 1992).

Okapis (and other mammals) are being killed for their meat. In some cases, the hunters are poor people who need protein to survive. But more and more, the carcasses are being sold to cities, where bushmeat is bought as a "gourmet" food.
The Okapi (or "forest giraffe") is a solitary, giraffe-like mammal found in rainforests of the upper Congo River Basin in central Africa. This nocturnal (most active at night) animal was only discovered by scientists in the early 1900's.

The Okapi, solitary, forest-dealing animals in their natural habitat are virtually impossible to mimic in captivity, because of the size of their territories, density and variety of the rainforest in Zaire.
About Okapi
Until 1901 the okapi was unknown outside of central Africa. It has remained undiscovered for so long because it lives in dense rain forests and is seldom seen.
The giraffe is related to deer and cattle, however, it is placed in a separate family, the Giraffidae, consisting only of the giraffe and its closest relative, the okapi. The giraffes range extends from Chad to South Africa.
The only other animal in this family is the okapi. With large, irregular brownish to black spots and yellow fur and a very long neck, the giraffe is indeed bizarre in form. The giraffe is the tallest living animal.
The giraffe (as well as its short-necked relative the okapi from Central African forests) has a distinctive walking gait, moving both legs on one side forward at the same time.
