Olive ridley turtles have been pursued for eggs and their skin used for leather production. In the 1960s, over one million olive ridley turtles were butchered each year on Mexico's Pacific coast.
The Olive Ridley Turtle has a large range within the tropical and subtropical regions in the Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the Southern Atlantic Ocean. They generally tend to stay within the latitudes of 40° North and 40° South.
The olive ridley turtle is named for the generally greenish color of its skin and shell, or carapace.
The Olive Ridley turtle nests in large colonies with 300 or more females nesting together on the shore. Females dig a nest 30cm - 55cm deep, and lay on average 107 eggs. The eggs look like white ping-pong balls and hatch after 45 - 51 days.
The olive ridley turtle was listed as endangered for the "Mexican nesting population" and threatened for all other populations on July 28, 1978.
