(n´´kf´r), small phylum with about 70 species of animals that are often called "missing links" between annelids (phylum Annelida) and arthropods (phylum Arthropoda).

 


=Onychophora (Peripatus, eec.). Grade 2 (of the Arthropoda). - Dignatha, Monoprosthomera. The third somite as well as the second develops a pair of parapodial jaws; the first somite is a prosthomere carrying jointed antennae.
= Diplopoda.

All these organisms have a body divided into repeating segments, typically with paired appendages. Two smaller phyla, the Onychophora and Tardigrada, are close relatives of the arthropods and share these traits.
