ORANG-UTAN (" man of the woods"), the Malay name of the giant red man-like ape of Borneo and Sumatra, known to the Dyaks as the mias, and to most naturalists as Simia satyrus.

Orang-utans have brown and rust-colored shaggy fur. They weigh an average of 50 kg (110 lb) and can weigh over 90 kg (200 lb). The orang-utan lives in tropical, swamp and mountain forests, where it eats mostly fruit, leaves and insects.

A young Orang-utan lives alone with its Mum and maybe an older sibling. Sometimes other Mother/juvenile groups will be met and even travelled with for some time. During these periods young Orangutans will play with each other.

Their brain is well developed then hemispheres are big and contain gyruses. Some animals have a wide nose septum (Hapalidae) whereas others a thin one (Catarrhina). Others have only a subtle nose (e.g.: Gorillas (Gorilla), Orang-utans (Pongo)).
