Orangutan
The Orangutan (called Pongo pygmaeus or Pongo abelli by scientists) is one of great apes of the world. It has long red hair and strong, long arms that help it hang and move through the trees where it lives.

Orangutans are solitary creatures. Adult males live primarily alone and only come together with females to mate. Adult females live with their young. Occasionally, adults will live with other adults for short periods in small temporary groups.
Orangutan Anthroploid ape which is found in the swampy coastal forests of Sumatra and Borneo. It mainly travels through the forest by swinging from branch to branch in the trees. When on the ground it walks awkwardly on all fours.
Orangutans are far less sociable than other apes and do not live in large social groups. Adults males are particularly solitary and stake out areas of forest which they defend as their own territories, fighting other males who intrude if necessary.
Orangutans are herbivorous, primarily eating fruit. They are also peaceful and intelligent. They spend most of their time in the treetops, constructing sleeping platforms of leaves and branches, much like a gorilla does.
Orangutans have an enormous arm span. A male may stretch his arms some 7 feet (2 meters) from fingertip to fingertip-a reach considerably longer than his standing height of about 5 feet (1.5 meters).

More than half-a-dozen separate races of orangutan are recognized in Borneo, where, however, they do not appear to be restricted to separate localities. In Sumatra the Deli and Langkat district is inhabited by S. satyrus deliensis and Abong by S. s.
