The river otter (Lutra canadensis) is a long, elongated water-loving animal found throughout Florida except the Keys. Its legs are short and has webbed toes for swimming.

The otter was once regarded as a pest and was hunted for its fur and for sport. Still, the otter population remained stable for many years. but in the 1950s it decreased as a result of pesticides which polluted the water.
Otters will eat whatever is available and easily caught. Octopus, frogs, crabs, and crayfish are easily grabbed by the Cape Clawless otter, making them a frequent part of their diet.
Otters can dive down to depths of 10 feet and can hold their breath up to 40 seconds under water. By using a combination of running and gliding otters have been clocked at speeds of 15-18 mph on ground, and can swim 6-7 mph.

Sea otters, Enhydra lutris (Linnaeus, 1758), are the largest member of the Family Mustelidae (70 species of river otters, skunks, weasels, badgers, etc.) and are the smallest marine mammal in North America. Males weigh 22-45 kg and are 1.2-1.
The otters are most active between 10-11 am and at the end of the day between 3-5 pm. They enjoy napping mid-day when the weather's really warm!

One of the animals that can be found in the North American Taiga is the river otter. The Taiga is an area that is rocky, a bit icy, and has lots of pine trees. The climate is cold, rainy, and snowy.
A sea otter's fur contains an estimated 650,000 hairs per square inch. Air is trapped between the hairs, keeping the animal dry.
River otters are adapted to living in and near water. Their nostrils and ears will close completely when they submerge underwater to look for food.
River otters are very social, playful animals. Their streamlined body ends with a long tail that is a powerful tool for swimming. Their undercoat is very thick to help keep them warm during the winter.
A river otter's long narrow body can range in length from 18"- 42 ", not including the tail. Weight can vary from 8 to 40 pounds with males larger than females. The brownish fur is short and dense.
Cape Clawless Otters are large otters which are around 1.3 metres in length and typically weigh around 12-18 Kg with males being around 2Kg heavier than females on average. Cape Clawless Otters can weigh up to around 25Kg.
Although many otters are highly social animals and often live in small family groups, the hairy-nosed otter is thought to be a largely solitary species, like its cousin the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra).
Eurasian river otters can be found in Europe and Asia. They inhabit water habitats of all kinds: small streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. They even live at the sea shore.
