Smallest and Largest: The smallest owl in the world is the Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi), which is about 6.1 inches (16 cm) long, has a wingspan of 15 inches (38 cm), and weighs about 1.5 ounces (4g).

The Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is a tiny migratory owl of the American southwest. It can be found during summer months in some areas of south and southwest Texas, southern New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of southern California.

Owl feathers are soft, almost like polar fleece to the touch. This helps to deaden the sound of air rushing over the feathers while the bird is in flight. Also the front edge of the first primary or wing feather is toothed like a hand saw.

The owl is equipped with sharp senses to help it find food in the dark. Its large eyes give it four times the night vision that we have. Its hearing is also extremely sharp, which comes in handy as it searches for rodents and other hidden prey.

Kakapo aka Owl Parrots
