org/ December 2 Race Point Seawatch Birding with Ed Slattery today,we had 2 Pacific Loons,3 Atlantic Puffins= along with Razorbills,Black-legged Kitiwakes,Northern Gannets,etc.We saw these birds near the end of Race Point on the north side.

The yellow-billed loon can be distinguished from the red-throated, Pacific, and arctic loons by its larger body size and black head.
In alternate plumage the paler gray head differentiates it from the darker-headed Common and Yellow-billed loons while the red throat separates it from the Pacific Loon.

Most were Pacific Loons, but we are seeing greater numbers of Common Loons (some of the younger ones never did fly north!), along with Red-throated Loons. The last two, Yellow-billed and Artic Loons, are seen only rarely this far south.
A small family of large water birds, with three species regularly seen in the UK (two of which breed) plus one rare vagrant from northern Asia (the white-billed diver). There is another similar species (the Pacific loon) in North America.
