Painted turtles are most active from March to October. During the winter painted turtles hibernate by burying themselves deep in the mud beneath streams and ponds.

Identification: The low, smooth carapace is black or olive, with red markings along or under the margins. Plastron yellow or orange with dark central blotch or figure.

Painted turtles are the most common turtle in Wisconsin. You can find them in marshes, ponds, shallow bays in lakes and even in the backwaters of some rivers.

The Painted Turtle has a black or greenish brown carapace with some red and yellow markings around the shell. The underside or plastron is yellow-orange with fine markings, looking like it has been painted.

Midland painted turtles are among the most abundant and certainly the most conspicuous turtles in Ohio. They are particularly fond of basking and can be seen by the dozens on logs and along the banks of most bodies of water through the summer.

True to its common name, the painted turtle has a beautifully smooth carapace with bright red and orange markings along its margin. Painted turtles are common to most ponds, marshes, lakes and rivers.

The Zoo is also home to many reptiles, including black rat snakes, garter snakes, eastern painted turtles, DeKay’s snakes, red-eared sliders, and ringneck snakes.

They include such well-known North American turtles as the pond turtles (including the spotted, wood, and Muhlenberg's turtles), the painted turtle, the sliders, the diamondback terrapin, and the Blanding's turtle.

Our large 1,000-gallon tank is home to map, Blanding's, soft-shelled, and painted turtles. Two smaller exhibits house mudpuppies, garter snakes, and leopard frogs, and we also have a small terrarium featuring tree frogs and salamanders.

The natural predators of the Crayfish include alligators, burbots (a type of cod), chicken turtle, painted turtle, desman a type of otter, grackle a type of a bird.

It is important to note that Manhattan now hosts only 4-5 species (Bullfrogs, Snapping turtles, Painted turtles, Red Eared Sliders, and possibly Spring Peepers).
