Parakeet - or parrakeet, common name for a widespread group of small parrots, native to the Indo-Malayan region and popular as cage birds.
The Parrakeetos are of a green Colour, and Orange-Colour'd half way their Head. Of these and the Allegators, there is none found to the Northward of this Province. They visit us first, when Mulberries are ripe, which Fruit they love extremely.
One species, the Mauritius Echo Parrakeet, has improved and has moved from Critically Endangered to Endangered. Fifteen years ago this parrot was one of the rarest in the world, and conservation efforts have increased its numbers.
At their first arrival in autumn, when they are occasionally seen in great numbers in the same flock, their aerial evolutions are very beautiful, for, like our Parrakeet, Passenger Pigeon, Rice-bird, Red-winged Starling, and other birds, ...
