PECCARY, the name of the New World representatives of the swine (Suidae) of the E. hemisphere, of which they constitute the sub-family Dicotylinae (or Tagassuinae).

The peccary is territorial and members of the group will defend their territory from other peccaries. A peccary will warn off an intruder by laying back its ears and chattering its teeth.

The Peccary is colored a grizzled black and gray overall with a dark dorsal stripe but is lighter around the shoulders. The fur is very coarse.

Within the Unites States, the Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu) is fairly common in many areas of south and west Texas as well as parts of Arizona and New Mexico.

The Chacoan peccary was first documented by Western science in 1975. It has only been reported from the region of western Paraguay, northern Argentina and southeastern Bolivia.

Javelina (Collared Peccary)
The javelina or collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) is a pig-like mammal that lives in deserts, dry woodlands, and chaparral in the southwestern USA and Mexico.

Deer, peccary, crocodiles, snakes, monkeys, deer, sloths, tapirs, turtles, eggs, frogs, fish and anything else it can catch.
Population

The total number of jaguars throughout their range is unknown.

Collared Peccary
Collared peccaries are named after the ring of white fur around their necks. The hairs are generally gray or black with a few white zones. They have slender legs and relatively small feet in proportion to the rest of the body.

In the southwestern United States, collared peccary (Pecari angulatus) can be an important part of the mountain lion diet [56].

Chacoan peccaries are the largest of the three peccary species. The other, more common species of Peccaries
are the Collared Peccary (sometimes called the Javelina) and the White-lipped Peccary. They are between 1.5 and 2.

Like those of suids, peccary canines develop sharp cutting edges as a result of wear. The cheek teeth form a continuous series and increase in size toward the back of the jaws. The premolars are increasingly molariform toward the back.

Although effective hunters they are considered opportunistic and have been recorded to have hunted 85 different species, anything from large domestic cattle, medium sized species like peccary to small fish and reptiles.
