South American Pilchard Sardinops sagax
Enormous shoals of these fish, made up of millions of individuals, were once found, but excessive fishing has reduced their numbers greatly.

An annotated and illustrated catalogue of the herrings, sardines, pilchards, sprats, shads, anchovies and wolf-herrings Part 1 - Chirocentridae
Whitehead, P.J.P. (1985). FAO species catalogue. Vol. 7.

The true sardine from France, Spain, and Portugal is usually the young pilchard (Sardinia pilchardus) of Mediterranean and Atlantic coastal waters.

: They feed primarily on shoaling pelagic fish such as anchovies, pilchards (sardines), horse mackerel, and round herrings, supplemented by squid and crustaceans. The distance they have to travel to find food varies, both temporally and spatially.

Bryde's whales, Balaenoptera brydei, feed almost exclusively on pelagic fish (pilchard, mackerel, herring, and anchovies), pelagic crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, and lobsters), and cephalopods (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish).

The main prey of the Common Dolphin are squid and small school fish such as sardines, pilchards and anchovies.

Also in this family are the menhadens, pilchards and shads, in total it contains 216 species. Most clupeids feed on plankton, and the majority of species are marine, though a few migrate between the sea and freshwater.

Octopus, anchovies, herring, cephalopods and pilchards are other marine animals the common dolphin can be seen eating. In some parts of the world, the common dolphin can be seen feeding at night.

Bryde's whales feed almost exclusively on pelagic fish (pilchard, mackerel, herring, and anchovies) and pelagic crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, and lobsters). They also have been observed to eat cephalopods (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish).

Food
small fish (pilchard, mackerel, herring), crustaceans (shrimp, crabs), also some octopus and squid. Eats more fish than many other baleen whales.

Diet: Penguin feed on pelagic shoaling fish such as pilchards and travel out to sea in search of food. The flipper-like modified wings allow Jackass Penguins to "fly" rapidly through the water.

The white-flippered penguin generally eats fish such as anchovies (Engraulis australis) and pilchards (Sardinops sagax) (Taylor, 2000).

In some areas, the Bryde's whale feeds predominantly on krill. In other areas, schooling fish, such as pilchards, anchovies, herring and mackerel, seem to be preferred.

Carnivore. Fish, especially anchovies, herring and pilchards; squid, and octopus.
Predators and Threats
Sharks, orcas, and humans.

Mostly a fishes scales lie shallowly in the dermis and are overlapping like the tiles on a roof, making them easily removed (Herring Pilchard and Sardines for instance) but in other species such as Plaice they are more deeply embedded and do not ...

In the ocean, they eat a variety of organisms including herring, pilchard, sandlance, squid, and crustaceans. Salmon grow rapidly in the ocean and often double their weight during a single summer season.

Although most commonly seen in groups of five to six, large groups of 30-40 have been observed in areas of food concentrations. This whale frequently feeds on pelagic fishes such as pilchard, mackerel, herring, mullet, and anchovies; however, ...

At night time, shrimp and other animals will surface to the photic zone to feed on the krill under the mask of darkness. A variey of different kinds of fish species (schooling fish like herring, pilchards, sardines, etc..) can also be found in the ...
