The pine grosbeak of the Old and New Worlds, the largest of the finches, feeds on conifer seeds and wild fruits; the western, or black-headed, grosbeak is an enemy of scale insects, codling moths, and flower beetles.

Of the fringillid grosbeaks, only two are found in North America:
the relatively small-billed pine grosbeak, of northern coniferous
forests around the world, and the very large-billed evening grosbeak.

The road out to the interpretive center is narrow, but by arriving early in the morning I was able to bird my way along the road slowly seeing: Short-eared owl, Blackpoll , Yellow-rumped, Yellow warblers, Pine Grosbeak, Tree Sparrows, Ravens.
