Pinnipeds - seals, sea-lions and walrus
The word pinniped means 'fin foot', as the four legs of seals, sea-lions and walrus have developed into flippers to better suit their life in the sea.

Order Pinnipedia
Eared Seals (1)
Walrus (1)
The name Pinnipedia is made of two Latin words: pinna (feather or wing) and pedis (foot). So the name literally means wing-footed.

Pinnipeds (Order Carnivora) are who live mostly in the water but spend some time on land or ice (usually to reproduce or rest). Pinnipeds include the seals, sea lions, and walrus; there are 33 species of pinnipeds alive today.

More on Pinniped
Seal - carnivorous aquatic mammal with front and hind feet modified as flippers, or fin-feet.

Pinnipeds
Hermes, the high-speed courier of Greek mythology who sported wings on his heels, may have been agile in the air.

The Pinnipedia are seals, sea lions, and walrus. For years there has been discussion about the classification of Pinnipedia with many scientists including them in Carnivora.

The Pinnipedia ("fin foot") includes the so-called aquatic carnivores. In fact, some mammalogists consider pinnipeds to be merely a subgroup of the order Carnivora, and do not recognize the ordinal classification of Pinnipedia.

Pinnipeds (from Latin pinna, wing or fin, and ped-, foot) or fin-footed mammals are a widely distributed and diverse group of semi-aquatic marine mammals comprising the families Odobenidae (the walrus), Otariidae (eared seals, ...

Pinnipeds are large, perhaps because water conducts heat well and large animals have a low surface area to body mass ratio, which minimizes heat loss due to conduction. Their bodies are insulated by a thick layer of fat called blubber.

Pinnipeds
The pinnipeds (Order Pinnipedia) are marine mammals that include sea lions, fur seals, and true seals. They are carnivores that are distantly related to dogs and bears.

The Pinnipedia superfamily (walruses, seals, and sea lions), now considered to be part of Caniformia, are medium to large (to 6.5 m) aquatic mammals.

These pinnipeds live along the rocky Pacific Ocean coastlines of western North America and also near Ecuador's Galápagos Islands. Huge colonies can be seen gathered on seaside rocks, and even on man-made structures, for breeding and for birthing.

They have the longest pupping period of any fur seal (or pinniped). Pups are born between mid-August and mid-November. Pups weigh 3-4.5 kg at birth. Females reach sexual maturity at 3-4 years, males around 7-10 years of age.

The Baikal seal is remarkable for being the only pinniped that is restricted solely to a freshwater habitat (2). Like other pinniped species, it may look rather ungainly on land, but in water it transforms into a remarkably graceful and agile animal.

Sea lions, walruses and seals are pinnipeds, which means "fin feet." Pinnipeds are adapted for hunting in the water.

The California sea lion is probably the most commonly seen pinniped along our coast. It has distinct external ears, large eyes, and elongated front flippers. Its hind flippers can be turned forward under its body, allowing it to walk on land.

Walruses are the largest type of fin-footed mammals, called pinnipeds. Others are seals, sea lions, and fur seals. Pinnipeds have four flippers - one pair in front, and one pair in back. About two-thirds of a walrus's life is spent in the water.

Great white sharks primarily eat fish, smaller sharks, turtles, dolphins, and pinnipeds such as seals and sea lions.Great Whites have also been known to eat garbage that can't be digested. In great white sharks above 3.

Sea lions are any of seven species in six genera of modern pinnipeds including one extinct one (the Japanese sea lion).

The harbor seal is the only pinniped that breeds along Puget Sound. Pinnipeds spend part of their lives in the water but depend on land to give birth and raise young.

One of the largest of the pinniped family, male Steller sea lions can weigh up to 3,000 pounds, and females up to 770 pounds. Males are 10 to 12 feet long (they can be larger than a bear) and females average around 9 feet in length.

The largest pinniped, the male southern elephant seal, can weigh as much as 5 1/2 tons. Its distinctive nose, which resembles an elephant's trunk, inflates when roaring to ward off male rivals during breeding season.

Walruses are members of the order Carnivora and suborder (or alternatively superfamily) Pinnipedia. They are the only members in the family Odobenidae.

The largest member of the Pinniped family is the Elephant Seal, the males of this species can grow to be 13 - 16 feet long. The smallest member is the Baikal Seal which grows to be just 3 - 4 feet long.
Male seals are called 'Bulls'.

The northern elephant seal is the largest of the northern hemisphere's pinnipeds. The adult male, with his pendulous snout, averages 2 t (2.2 tn.) and is about 4 m long (13 ft.). The females are smaller, about 2.

The decline and eventual disappearance of this subfamily seems to be connected by increased competition as mammal groups such as cetaceans and pinnipeds became better-adapted to a marine lifestyle in the Oligocene and Miocene.

There are 32 members of the Order Pinnipedia (fin-footed) in the world, 18 of which are true seals. Then there are 13 species of sealions or fur seals - and the one species of walrus belongs to a group all of its own.
