Pintail breed in the northern parts of North America, Europe and Asia and winter further south but rarely, if ever, crossing the Equator.

These are fine birds to enjoy for their antics and the splendid breeding plumage of the male. The Pintail Whydah is one of the most common forms of Whydah available.

Pintails swimming
Male pintails have chocolate-brown heads with broad white stripe running down their neck. They have a finely barred grey body and a black and white tail with elongated black feathers that give the bird its name.

Pintails are dabbling ducks. The "dabbling" refers to their feeding behavior rather than a swimming style. Their feet are located more toward the center of the body rather than toward the rear, as in diving ducks.

The Pintail or Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) is a common and widespread duck which breeds in the northern areas of Europe and Asia and across most of Canada, Alaska and the mid-western United States.

Female pintail ducks are good mothers. They sit on their six to 12 eggs until they hatch within about three weeks. After that, she will protect her brood with her life.

Bahama pintails feed by dabbling from the surface or tipping in calm, shallow water.

Northern Pintails are among the earliest nesting ducks in North America, beginning shortly after ice-out in many northern areas.

The Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) is a widespread duck across all of North America. In general it breeds across much of the northern United States and all of Canada, and winters along both coasts and much of the southern U.S. and Mexico.

Habitat Northern pintail ducks nest in open country with shallow, seasonal wetlands and low vegetation. It winters in wide-variety of freshwater habitats including marshes, ponds, lakes, rivers and canals.

Most Northern Pintails are raised on tundra ponds, prairie potholes and similar aquatic habitats, after hatching in ground nests, usually on arctic tundra, prairie grasslands or agricultural fields.

A visit to the Chincoteague Fish and Wildlife Refuge, can reveal an array of waterfowl including pintail, gadwall, merganser, wigeon, mallards, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, Canada and snow geese.
