Seahorse - common name for certain small fishes of the family Syngnathidae, inhabiting warm waters but sometimes found as far north as Cape Cod.
Pipefish (Syngnathinae) are small fish, which with the Seahorses form a distinct family. Pipefish look like straight-bodied seahorses with tiny mouths.
Seahorses, pipefish and seadragons fall under the family Syngnathidae. They all feed by sucking tiny invertebrates up into their snouts and the males brood the eggs in a pouch until they hatch out.

The Snake Pipefish is occasionally eaten, but it has poor nutritional value. The amount of these fish is increasing in the Common Murre's diet.

Seahorses can be kept in an aquarium with other seahorses, pipefish, and other non-aggressive, slow moving fish. Seahorses are slow feeders, and in an aquarium with fast, aggressive feeders, the seahorses will be edged out during feeding.
