The Pochard forms a superspecies with the Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) of North America although it looks superficially more like the Redhead (Aythya americana) also of North America but which has a yellow iris rather than a red one in the male.

Back to the pochards, or diving ducks. This one is a regular "visitor" to the west coast. One of the Eurasian species in the Aythya genus, the Tufted Duck, Aythya fuligula, is seen just about every year in the Bay Area, usually in 3-5 locations.

The common name white-eye is also given to certain of the unrelated pochards (ducklike birds) of the family Anatidae and especially to the white-eyed pochard (Nyroca ferina).

This species is very closely allied to the Pochard, or Red-headed Duck, Fuligula Ferina, but is much larger, and differs in having the bill proportionally higher at the base, and less dilated towards the end.

They live primarily on fresh water. The pochards nest on fresh
water but winter on inland lakes and along the coasts. Eiders

When compared to other Pochards, the Redheads bill is shorter. Its forehead and crown are set back a little higher and are more rounded as opposed to being flattened. Therefore, their heads have a puffy effect.
