Prions are small petrels. They are found in the Southern Ocean and breed on a number of subantarctic islands. Prions grow 20-27 cm long, and have blue-grey upper parts and white underparts.

We had Fairy Prions and Crested Tern before hitting a relatively quiet area. The regulars call this the Abysmal Plain. They know the birding will pick up after we get to the edge of the shelf.

Prions are something new that has alarmed the world by causing 'mad cow disease'.
Prions are even simpler than viruses as they are just a clump of protein.
There's no DNA or RNA, no cell wall, nothing that would make it appear to be a living thing.

The graceful blue shark is well known to scuba divers and commercial fishers - they have been seen circling divers and have followed fishing boats for days, eating stray fish.

The Momotidae form but a small group, containing about six genera, of which the best known are: Momotus, Baryphthengus, Hylomanes, Eumomota, Aspatha and Prionorhynchus, and the number of species is very small.

The Huia relied mainly on insects for their food, especially those living in wood or under bark such as the abundant huhu beetle grub, Prionoplus reticularis.

It is widely distributed, but mostly breeds on offshore islands that hold populations of prions and petrels which form the bulk of its prey.

This family includes species such as petrels and prions. All members of the family have tube-like nostrils on the top of their upper beak and are believed to be one of the few bird families with a well-developed sense of smell.

It is caused by an abnormal protein called a prion which affects the animal's brain and is invariably fatal. Usually, months to years pass from the time an animal is infected to when it shows signs of the disease.

What they may not know is that the heroes of Finding Nemo are actually called false anemonefish. True anemonefish, Amphiprion percula, are nearly identical, but have subtle differences in shape and live in different habitats.
