The Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) breeds along the coast of Alaska and winters southward on the Pacific coast to Washington and Oregon.

Puffins' natural predators include various types of gulls, including the black-backed gull. They also tend to be hunted by humans for their meat in Iceland and Norway.

Puffins are still abundant in many parts of the world but their numbers have begun to decrease due to hunting and pollution. Oil pollution is one of the greatest risks for these sea birds. Also, humans hunt puffins for their feathers and meat.

Puffins are small seabirds that belong in the scientific family Alcidae. There are three species of living puffins: common, horned and tufted. These birds, along with auks, guillemonts, and murres of alcids exist today.

Puffins walk erect, live in colonies and are very curious and tame. They utter low, purring noises in flight, low grunts and groans while nesting. They ride high on the water like ducks and must run across the surface of the water to become airborne.

Puffins are expert divers. They use their wings to propel themselves underwater. They can dive up to hundreds of feet to catch fish. Preferred fish are capelin and sand lance.

Puffin viewing has also started to become popular in Elliston Newfoundland, previously named Bird Island Cove, located near Trinity. Here, puffins have been known to be tame enough to get even 2 or 3 feet away from them.

Atlantic puffins land on North Atlantic seacoasts and islands to form breeding colonies each spring and summer. Iceland is the breeding home of perhaps 60 percent of the world's Atlantic puffins.

Atlantic Puffins live in colonies. In Canada, the largest are found on islands off Newfoundland, where estimates of single-colony populations have reached 250 000. Winters are spent offshore.

Like all puffins, tufteds are better at swimming than flying. They dart after fast-moving fish and snatch them up in their large beaks.
