In North America the sparrowlike eastern purple finch, Carpodacus purpureus (actually rose-brown), has been largely driven out by the house sparrow. There are several purple finches in the West, where the house finch, or linnet, is common.

The species most similar to the House Finch is the Purple Finch. The most common time of the year to see the Purple Finch in Georgia is during the winter, when this bird occasionally comes to bird feeders.

The house finch, the purple finch, and Cassin's finch are
native to North America.
Many members of this group are fine song birds and are popular as
cage birds, especially the canary and its relatives.
