The bonobo, has in the past, been referred to as the "pygmy chimpanzee and this is a misnomer. Even though they have a more slender body and different shaped head than the common chimpanzee, they weigh as much as the smallest of the subspecies.

The bonobo (Pan paniscus), until recently usually called the Pygmy chimpanzee and less often the Dwarf or Gracile chimpanzee, is one of the two species comprising the chimpanzee genus, Pan.

Apart from humans, the orang-utan is the only one of the five great apes - the orang-utan, the gorilla, the common chimpanzee, the bonobo (pygmy chimpanzee) and man - to live outside Africa.

Two species of chimpanzee, or chimp, exist: the common chimpanzee and the bonobo, also known as the pygmy chimpanzee.

paniscus (sometimes called the pygmy chimpanzee), is found only in the Congo (Kinshasa) S of the Congo River.
