While the pygmy hippopotamus' name offers a comparison to its much-larger cousin, this semi-aquatic mammal is no pipsqueak. Adult pygmy hippopotamuses can reach six feet in length and weigh up to 600 pounds.

The pygmy hippopotamus is usually solitary but can sometimes be found in small family groups. Males, called bulls, have larger territories than cows (females) and both mark their homes with their droppings.

Pygmy hippopotamuses range in mass from 160 to 275 kg. Body lengths are 1.5to 1.75 m and tail lengths are 0.2 m. Height is 0.7 to 1.0 m at the shoulder.

Pygmy hippopotamuses are more terrestrial than Nile hippopotamuses but are good swimmers and have strong muscular valves that close their ears and nostrils when submerged. They also produce a whitish secretion that moistens and protects their skin.

The pygmy hippopotamus is endangered, mainly because of the heavy clearing of forest areas.

The river hippopotamus has four incisors and the pygmy hippopotamus six. Other extinct hippos had only two incisors.

This family consists of two species, the common hippopotamus and the pygmy hippopotamus. The predominant difference between the two is their size. Both have a rounded body, broad head, and short legs.

Despite extensive overlapping of home ranges, pygmy hippopotamuses rarely meet others of their species. Indeed, they actively avoid encounters with others, presumably through dung marking.

In western Africa the pygmy hippopotamus is found, fossils of extinct species have been discovered in India, and Europe, and England.

The pygmy hippopotamus, Choeropsis liberiensis, is found in W Africa. It is about 30 in. (75 cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs about 400 lb (180 kg). It tends to be solitary and spends much of its time on the shore, sleeping by day in thickets.
