Pygmy marmosets are currently not endangered. However they are listed as special concern or somewhat threatened. Because of their size, mobility and coloration, it is almost impossible to count the pygmy marmosets living in the South American forests.
When an incoming snake, wild cat or bird threatens a pygmy marmoset, the entire family group often mobs the predator until it retreats.

The Pygmy Marmoset lives in social groups up to about 15.
Lots of helpers: There is a breeding pair, plus offspring. Even as the offspring get older -some reaching adulthood, they may stay in the group without breeding.
They range in size from the pygmy marmoset, which is 8 in. (20 cm) long including the tail and weighs 3 oz (85 g), to species about the size of house rats. Many of the larger species are called tamarins.

They vary from the little pygmy marmoset and the fat-tailed dwarf lemur to the mandrill and the hamadryas baboon.
Monkeys range in size from the Pygmy Marmoset, at 14-16 cm (5-6 inch) long (plus tail) and 120-140 g (4-5 oz) in weight, to the male Mandrill, almost 1 metre (3 ft) long and weighing 35 kg (75 lb).
They weigh from 4 ounces=113 g (the pygmy marmoset) to 100 pounds=45 kg (the mandrill). Monkeys have long arms; their five-fingered hands and feet have opposable thumbs.
The pygmy marmoset is the smallest monkey of all and is 14cm long, weighing only 90g. The golden lion tamarin is the largest and related to the golden headed and golden rumped tamarins - all are among the most endangered of all mammals.

Many species have a colorful coat, mustaches, or manes. The smallest is the Pygmy marmoset (4 ounces) and the largest is the Lion tamarin (22 ounces). Most have claws rather than nails, and all have long tails and a short snout.
"Marmoset" is derived from the French "marmouset" which means, loosely, shrimp or dwarf. An apt name, considering they are the smallest of the true monkeys (the lightest of the true monkeys is the pygmy marmoset).
