nocturnal New World mammal of the genus Procyon. The common raccoon of North America, Procyon lotor, also called coon, is found from S Canada to South America, except in parts of the Rocky Mts.

Raccoons exhibit a phenomenon known as dabbling. This involves "washing" their food in the water. Many people believe that the raccoon washes its food before consumption, this is untrue. The water on the raccoons paws enhances its sense of touch.

Raccoon

Raccoons are small, very adaptable mammals from North and South America and a few tropical islands. They live in a variety of habitats, including marshes, forests, , cities, and suburbs.

Raccoon Related to the Kinkajou and the panda . A nocturnal mammal from the New World measuring 2 to 3 ft. in total length. In most cases it nests in hollow trees or climbs high to refuge.

Raccoons range from North, Central, and South America.
Raccoons inhabit forested areas with mature and/or hollow trees in which to nest. They have adapted to live in urban and rural areas.

Raccoons in the northern parts of their range gorge themselves in spring and summer to store up body fat. They then spend much of the winter asleep in a den.

Raccoons remain in partial hibernation during most of the winter. The animals often den together in small groups. One woman found 23 raccoons sharing an abandoned house in Swift County.

The raccoon is mostly nocturnal. It is also solitary, except for mothers and their young. In the winter the raccoon may sleep in its den for a few weeks but it does not hibernate.

RED PANDA
Red Pandas are bear-like mammals from mountains in Asia.

Raccoons and opossums will stick their arms inside nest boxes and try to pull out the adult, young, and eggs. Adding a predator guard to the bird house or to its pole support is a simple solution.

Like raccoons, red pandas dip their paws in water to get them wet and then lick them off to drink.
