Description Oncorhynchus is Greek meaning "hook snout", and mykiss is the Kamchatkan name for rainbow trout. Rainbow trout have a characteristic salmon-like shape.

Rainbow trout
The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), aka redband trout, is a species of Pacific salmon (1989) native to tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America.

Rainbow trout are native to the Pacific Ocean and fresh waters of western North America. They naturally range from Mexico to Alaska and inland to the Rockies.

Rainbow trout are native west of the Rocky Mountains. Although they are a cold-water fish, they can survive warmer temperatures than some other trout. They were first stocked in Minnesota in the 1890s.

Rainbow trout like to hang out in lakes or ponds and they spend part of their lives at sea before returning to freshwater to reproduce. They like water temperatures of 12 to 18 degrees Celsius. They also like clear, cool deep lakes.
