Ray-finned fishes are a very diverse class, about half of all vertebrates being ray-fins. They get their name from the form of their fins - bony struts with a web of skin covering them.

The Manta Ray is the largest of the ray type of fish and a close relative of the shark. Unlike other fish, rays do not have bones--their skeleton is made of cartilage. They have a short tail and no stinging spine, so they are harmless to humans.
The manta ray, which makes up this family, is one of the largest fishes. They feed primary on plankton though they do eat fish. They, like other members of the Myliobatiformes order, have a flattened, disc shaped body with large pectoral fins.
As with other ray species, spotted eagle rays possess flat plates of teeth which are used to crush the hardened shells of preys items such as bivalves and crustaceans.
