The Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is a nesting bird throughout the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains as well as much of Canada and the far northern United States. The species may be found in winter virtually anywhere in the U.S.

Migration: Red-breasted Nuthatches are permanent residents in much of Canada and the mountains of the western United States.

Red-breasted Nuthatches are fairly common, year-round, resident birds of Alberta, occurring most abundantly in coniferous or mixed woods. Their range includes the entire forested region of the province, including Cypress Hills.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch ( Sitta canadensis) is a small (4-1/2 inches long) nuthatch with a black cap and a black line through the eye and a white line above it. The underparts are rust colored. Back, wings and tail a slate blue grey.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch occurs mostly in upper elevations throughout the United States all year. In the winter it occupies most of the middle and eastern portions of the country.

About the size of a Red-breasted Nuthatch with a brown cap and dark eyeline bordering the cap. Gray on the back and buff below. A small white or pale nape spot may be visable at close range.
