The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is an endangered species of the southeastern U.S. In fact, this species is endemic to that area having never been sighted outside of the region.

Red-cockaded Woodpeckers forage in a wide variety of pine species and especially favor areas that contain large trees with loose bark.

HABITAT: Red-cockaded woodpeckers can be found in mature pine forests. Longleaf forests are the preferred habitat, but other pine forests containing loblolly pine can also be used.

Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are common only in a few areas with mature longleaf or slash pine forests. They excavate nests in the pines, usually those infected with a fungus that rots the heartwood.

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker has an uncommon social system known as cooperative breeding. The birds live as family groups of 2 - 5 individuals.

In the Southeast, red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) holes are used successively by other woodpeckers (Picidae), flycatchers (Empidonax spp.), titmice (Parus spp.), and eastern bluebirds.

It's certainly not as specific as the Red-cockaded Woodpecker by any means, ...

HABITAT:
Woodpeckers live in wooded areas and forests. Some woodpecker species require a very specific conditions for their home. For example, the red-cockaded woodpecker can only live in mature pine forests in the southeastern United States.
