The Red-eared Slider gets its name from the broad red or orange stripe behind each eye. Adult turtles have a dull olive green carapace.

Ohio's Blanding's turtles are limited primarily to the northern counties along Lake Erie, where they inhabit the marshy shorelines, inland streams, and wet meadows.

One estimate claims that 5 to 10 million red-eared slider hatchlings are exported world-wide each year. When small, these turtles are irresistibly cute, but grow quickly to between 12 and 28 cm.

Some states have other laws and regulations regarding possession of Red-eared Sliders (abbreviated as RES) as pets because they are looked upon as invasive species or pests where they are not native but have been introduced through the pet trade.

The Zoo is also home to many reptiles, including black rat snakes, garter snakes, eastern painted turtles, DeKay’s snakes, red-eared sliders, and ringneck snakes.

Miscellaneous: Another sub-species, the red-eared slider, is a common aquarium pet. They have been released and become established in areas outside their native range, where they often out compete native turtle species.
