The California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii) was originally described in 1852 by Baird and Girard as Rana draytonii. See Amphibian Species of the World.

The red-legged frog (Rana aurora, Fig. 3) is fairly common west of crest of the Cascade Range. It inhabits moist forests near cool ponds, lakes, and slow streams, especially where aquatic vegetation provides cover.

The Red-legged Frog is a medium to large sized frog. It is divided into two subspecies, Northern Red-legged Frog, R. a. aurora, which attains lengths around 3 inches and the California Red-legged Frog, R. a.

The red-legged frog has disappeared from over 70 percent of its historic range in California. It was added to the threatened species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1996.

Larvae eat snails, Pacific Tree Frogs, and Red-legged Frog tadpoles.
Life Cycle The western red-backed salamander mates from November to December. The female lays a clutch of about 10 eggs from April to May.

However, African clawed frogs breed through pelvic amplexus and scatter their eggs, similar to bullfrogs and native California red-legged frogs.
