Red-necked Phalarope
Red-necked Phalaropes have long needle shaped bills. Breeds on the tundra including Churchill, Manitoba and migrates offshore. It can be found on western lakes and the Salton Sea in southern California in the fall.

Red-necked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus. Occasional inland and rare in spring and fall in all regions. Pelagic. Found in the Gulf, on bays, along pond margins, and in open marshes.

Red and Red-necked Phalaropes are unusual amongst shorebirds in that they are considered pelagic, that is, they spend a great deal of their lives outside the breeding season well out to sea.

Red Phalarope is about 21 cm (8 inches) in length, with lobed toes and a straight bill, somewhat thicker than that of Red-necked Phalarope. The breeding female is predominantly dark brown and black above, with red underparts and white cheek patches.
