Red-shanked douc langurs are vegetarians. In the wild these animals primarily consume the foliage of a variety of rain forest trees preferring young leaf shoots.

The red-shanked Douc langur (P.n. nemaeus) is one of five colobine monkey species found only in Vietnam and Laos. The distribution of the Douc langur is from Nghe An Province in the north to Tay Ninh Province in the south (500-1000m altitude).
There are three species, or kinds, of Douc Langurs: the Red-shanked Douc Langur and the Black-shanked Douc Langur.
